An Alabama postal worker was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after it was claimed that the worker was throwing meatballs with nails in them to dogs along her postal route, according to news reports.
Susanna Dawn Burhans, 47, was arrested on Friday after a complaint several weeks ago that led to a joint investigation between the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Postal Service, according to AL.com.
“The investigation determined the she had, in fact, fed these dangerous meatballs to at least one dog in the community,” said sheriff’s Capt. Mike Salomonsky, according to AL.com.
“We gathered intelligence from the Postal Service and put everything together,” he said.
“Right now, we know for sure there’s one dog. But there’s another neighbor that had a complaint, so there might be two or more.”
There may very well be two, but if there are two that authorities are aware of, there could be more, too.
Hopefully, other dog owners are able to discover the threat before serious damage is caused — or better yet, hopefully other dogs were able to avoid the weaponized meatballs entirely.
Burhans has been released on a $2,500 bond, according to WHNT.
These charges are deeply disturbing. If they’re true, the punishment should be severe.
