Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has decided not to accept the position in the Department of Homeland Security as Assistant Secretary in the Office of Public Engagement.
He was reportedly supposed to start at the end of this month, but announced Friday that he would not accept the position.
Here he is when he first accepted the position:
According to his representative, Craig Peterson, “Sheriff Clarke is 100% committed to the success of President Trump, and believes his skills could be better utilized to promote the President’s agenda in a more aggressive role.”
It is not clear what that more aggressive role might be; however, Peterson also said that Trump met with the Sheriff last week, to discuss other roles he might take, that would be of benefit to the Trump administration and to the country.
Sheriff Clarke was a very vocal supporter of Trump during his presidential campaign. He also grew a lot of support from conservatives, partly for his tough stance on crime.
Sheriff Clarke’s jail has come under scrutiny recently, after a mentally ill man reportedlydied of dehydration while in solitary confinement there. Charges may be filed against some of the jail staff and it’s not yet clear if the Sheriff might be charged.
Those are, of course, very serious allegations. It’s not clear whether they played any part in the Sheriff’s decision.
